MY TRIP TO THE GRAND OPENING OF THE MUSTANG OWNERS MUSEUM

THE MUSTANG OWNERS MUSEUM OPENED IT’S DOORS WEDNESDAY APRIL 17, 2019 – IT IS LOCATED NEXT TO DANIEL AND DENNIS CARPENTER’S MUSTANG RESTORATION PARTS MANUFACTURING PLANT IN CONCORD, NC. ABOUT A MILE FROM CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY. SINCE I AM A FOUNDING MEMBER, I WAS INVITED TO BE ONE OF THE FIRST 500 IN ON WEDNESDAY MORNING BUT I DIDN’T ARRIVE IN CONCORD TILL THURDAY EVENING. I PLANNED TO GO BY THE MUSEUM FRIDAY MORNING BRIEFLY AND SPEND MOST OF THE DAY AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY WHERE THEY WERE HAVING THE 55TH YEAR MUSTANG SHOW. FRIDAY MORNINGS WEATHER FORCAST FOR THE DAY WAS CALLING FOR RAIN AND STORMS, SO I DECIDED TO SKIP THE SHOW THAT DAY AND GO CHECK OUT THE MUSEUM. I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED BY THE NUMBER OF CARS AND MEMORABILIA THEY HAD CONSIDERING THE PLACE WAS EMPTY JUST A FEW DAYS BEFORE. THERE WERE ABOUT 50 CARS INSIDE. SOME INCLUDED AN EARLY CONVERTBLE USED ON THE MAGIC SKYWAY AT THE FORD PAVILLION DURING THE 1964 WORLDS FAIR WHERE THE MUSTANG WAS INTRODUCED, A DISPLAY OF ALL THREE PACE CAR EDITIONS FROM 65,79 & 94, A COUPLE OF HIGHWAY PATROL FOX BODY CARS, A 2009 IACOCCA EDITION MUSTANG, AN ORIGINAL BARN FIND IN A SMALL BARN BUILT IN THE MUSEUM AND THERE WAS A GOOD AMOUNT OF MEMORABILIA TO LOOK AT ALL AROUND THE MUSEUM. MCA HAD A CORNER OF THE MUSEUM WITH A DISPLAY OF CARS AND PICTURES FROM THE MUSTANG TIMES OVER THE YEARS. OF COURSE, THERE WAS A GIFT SHOP WITH T-SHIRTS, HATS AND STUFF YOU COULD BUY. THERE WAS A SMALL ROOM OFF OF THE MUSEUM WHERE A LADY WAS SELLING SOME OF HER PERSONAL COLLECTION OF MUSTANG “STUFF” MOSTLY MODEL KITS AND DIECAST. THE PROCEEDS WERE GOING TO THE MUSEUM. I GOT TO TALKING WITH HER AND FOUND OUT SHE USE TO OWN THE SONNY & CHER MUSTANGS. I HAD SEEN THEM AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY AT THE 30TH CELEBRATION WHEN SHE HAD THEM TRAILORED OVER FROM CALIFORNIA TO THE SHOW. THE CARS HAVE BEEN SOLD A FEW TIMES SINCE THEN. OUTSIDE THERE WAS A NEW JOEY LOGANO MUSTANG NASCAR AND A 2020 SHELBY GT 500 ON DISPLAY. FRIDAY NIGHT, I HAD A TICKET TO ATTEND THE HALL OF FAME DINNER AT THE MUSEUM. MEMBERS VOTED ON HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES EARLIER IN THE YEAR AND THE WINNERS WERE THERE TO SPEAK AND BE PRESENTED A PLAQUE. WINNERS INCLUDED GALE HALDERMAN, JOHN CLOR AND KEVIN MARTI. BY SATURDAY, THE RAIN HAD STOPPED BUT IT WAS COOL AND I HEADED TO THE SPEEDWAY FOR THE SHOW. AFTER PARKING IN THE SHOW, I MADE MY WAY AROUND LOOKING AT THE CARS AND MANY VENDORS WERE SET UP AROUND THE TRACK. I DIDN’T BOTHER CLEANING UP MY CAR AT THIS SHOW SINCE THERE WAS STILL THE THREAT OF RAIN AND IT WAS TOO COLD AND WINDY. THERE WASN’T ANY JUDGING GOING ON, MORE OF A CRUISE-IN. AFTER 2 HOURS, I LEFT AND WENT BACK TO THE MUSEUM. A COUPLE OF PEOPLE I SAT WITH AT THE DINNER THE NIGHT BEFORE WERE TALKING ABOUT TOURING THE CARPENTER MUSEUMS BEHIND THE MUSTANG MUSEUM SO I DECIDED TO GO CHECK THOSE OUT. I’M GLAD I DID. THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF CARS AND SO MUCH MEMORABILIA. A LOT OF IT FOR SALE TOO. IT IS A MUST SEE IF YOUR VISITING THE CONCORD AREA. THE MUSTANG OWNERS MUSEUM IS OPEN MONDAY – SATURDAY 10-5 AND SUNDAY 12-5. CHILDREN 15 & YOUNGER FREE. ADMISSION IS $10.

I JUST WANT TO ADD A NOTE TO DICK ZIGLER THAT I’M SORRY I DIDN’T GET TO A CRACKER BARREL ON THIS TRIP, BUT I DID VISIT A WAFFLE HOUSE TWICE! BY: STEVE YOUNG
